Apple has rolled out a major firmware update for USB-C AirPods Max headphones, introducing lossless audio and ultra-low latency capabilities. The new 7E99 firmware update, paired with iOS 18.4, brings premium audio features to the latest model of Apple's over-ear headphones.

The update enables 24-bit 48 kHz lossless audio support, allowing users to experience music exactly as artists created it in the studio. This high-fidelity audio is only available when using a USB-C cable connection, as Bluetooth remains a lossy transmission method.

For music creators, the update offers new professional capabilities. Musicians can now use AirPods Max with Logic Pro and other music creation software to record and mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking. Gamers will also benefit from the ultra-low latency feature, which eliminates noticeable delays between on-screen action and audio playback.

However, these new features come with some limitations. The update is exclusively available for the USB-C version of AirPods Max released in September 2024. Owners of the original Lightning port model will not receive these upgrades, likely due to USB-C's superior data transfer capabilities.

To access these features, users must:

  • Have the USB-C version of AirPods Max
  • Update to firmware version 7E99
  • Use devices running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4
  • Connect via USB-C cable for lossless audio

The firmware update installs automatically when AirPods Max are within Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi-connected Apple device and plugged in for charging. Users can verify their firmware version through the Settings menu under Bluetooth options.

Apple has also introduced a new USB-C to 3.5mm Audio Cable, priced at $39, enabling users to connect their AirPods Max to devices with traditional headphone jacks while maintaining the new high-quality audio capabilities.
