Apple has officially launched its hearing aid functionality for AirPods Pro 2 in the United Kingdom, marking a major advancement in accessible hearing technology. The feature, previously only available in the US, is now live through a free software update as of February 24, 2025.
The new capability allows AirPods Pro 2 to function as clinical-grade hearing aids for those with mild to moderate hearing loss. Users can access this feature through a two-step process - first completing a hearing test, and then receiving a personalized hearing profile that adjusts audio frequencies to match their specific needs.
The hearing test, which takes approximately 5 minutes, plays a series of tones that users respond to by touching their device's display. This creates an individualized profile that enables the AirPods to amplify specific sound frequencies, particularly helpful in challenging environments like noisy rooms.
UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting highlighted the potential impact, noting that "half of people with hearing problems don't use hearing aids," suggesting this new option could help more individuals manage their hearing health effectively.
While the AirPods Pro 2 offer a more discreet alternative to traditional hearing aids, users should note some limitations. The earbuds require regular recharging after approximately six hours of use, though a quick five-minute charge provides an additional hour of functionality. The feature is also exclusively available for iPhone users and only works with AirPods Pro 2 models, as they require specific in-ear sealing technology.
The launch follows recent policy changes by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, and the technology has been validated by the British Academy of Audiology, confirming its effectiveness matches recognized audio tests.
