Anker has announced an immediate recall of approximately 80,000 Bluetooth speakers sold in the US and Canada after multiple reports of overheating and fire incidents.
The recall affects three specific models of Anker's Soundcore and PowerConf speakers that were sold exclusively on Amazon between March and October 2023, with prices ranging from $28 to $130.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received 33 reports of the speakers' lithium-ion batteries overheating, with some incidents resulting in smoke and small fires. One minor burn injury has been reported in connection with an overheating unit.
The affected models are:
- A3102016 (Soundcore)
- A3302011 (PowerConf)
- A3302031 (PowerConf)
Owners of these speakers should immediately:
- Stop using the device
- Turn off the speaker
- Disconnect it from any power source or charger
To check if your speaker is part of the recall, locate the SN code printed on the bottom of the device and verify it through Anker's website. The company has committed to providing free replacement speakers to affected customers.
This safety concern follows a similar incident in October when Anker recalled 2,000 Power Banks due to overheating and explosion risks, which resulted in two burn injuries.
Customers should note that recalled speakers containing lithium-ion batteries should not be disposed of in regular trash. Instead, they should be recycled properly through retail locations like Staples or Home Depot that offer free electronics recycling services.
Both Anker and Amazon have begun contacting known purchasers of the affected speakers to inform them about the recall process.
