A collaboration between tech giants Apple and Sony continues as they work to bring PlayStation VR2 Sense controller support to the Apple Vision Pro headset, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.
The integration would allow Vision Pro users to use Sony's VR controllers as optional accessories, offering more precise control for virtual reality experiences compared to standard PS5 and Xbox controllers. While traditional gaming controllers are already compatible with Vision Pro, they lack six degrees of freedom (6DOF) needed for immersive VR gaming.
The feature is expected to arrive through a visionOS software update later this year. Beyond gaming applications, the PS VR2 Sense controllers could provide enhanced navigation of the Vision Pro's operating system interface.
Sony's PS VR2 Sense controllers come equipped with thumbsticks, buttons, grip triggers, index triggers, and advanced haptic feedback capabilities. Currently, Sony does not sell these controllers separately, but plans indicate they would become available through Apple Stores and Apple's website once support launches.
While this partnership shows Apple's continued interest in gaming, industry observers note that controller support alone may not dramatically impact Vision Pro's current sales performance. With an estimated user base of around 500,000 devices, developers may need additional incentives to port games to the platform.
The timing of the official announcement remains uncertain, though development appears to be actively progressing. The feature could potentially be unveiled at Apple's annual software conference WWDC 2024 in June, where visionOS 3 is expected to be revealed.
