Apple is set to broaden its digital ID program by adding driver's licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet in seven additional U.S. states. Montana, West Virginia, Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Utah are slated to join the growing list of states offering this convenient digital identification option.

Currently, nine states and Puerto Rico already allow residents to add their driver's licenses and state IDs to their iPhones and Apple Watches. The feature launched first in Arizona in March 2022, followed by Maryland, Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, Hawaii, California, Iowa, and New Mexico.

The digital ID system enables users to present their identification at select TSA checkpoints across 16 U.S. airports, including major hubs like Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and San Francisco International Airport. Travelers can verify their identity by simply tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch at participating security checkpoints.

Beyond airport security, the digital IDs can be used to verify age and identity at select businesses and venues throughout the United States. Apple has also announced plans to integrate with CLEAR's airport enrollment system, allowing users to sign up using their digital ID.

Looking internationally, Apple plans to expand this technology beyond U.S. borders, with Japan's My Number Card system scheduled for future integration.

The digital ID feature represents a shift toward more convenient, contactless identification methods, though users should note that physical ID cards are still required as backup. Implementation dates for the seven new states have not yet been announced, but rollouts are expected throughout 2025.
