Apple is exploring partnerships with Chinese tech giants Tencent and ByteDance to bring AI features to iPhones in mainland China, according to recent reports. The early-stage discussions come as Apple seeks to navigate China's strict regulatory requirements for AI services.
The iPhone maker needs to partner with local AI providers to offer its Apple Intelligence features in China, where popular Western AI services like ChatGPT remain unavailable. Apple previously engaged in talks with Chinese search leader Baidu, but those discussions stalled over data privacy concerns.
Both potential partners bring established AI capabilities to the table. Tencent launched its Hunyuan AI model in September 2023, followed by the Yuanbao chatbot. ByteDance has been aggressively expanding its AI presence with its Doubao large language model and chatbot, which reached over 48 million monthly active users by October.
The partnership talks reflect Apple's strategic push to maintain its position in China's smartphone market while adhering to local regulations. Chinese rules require government approval for generative AI services before public release.
