Apple is set to release the second generation of its popular item tracking device, AirTag 2, in mid-2025 with a notable improvement in tracking range, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
The upcoming AirTag 2 will feature Apple's latest technology, which promises to triple the tracking range compared to the current model. This enhanced capability means users could potentially track items from up to 60 meters (approximately 200 feet) away, matching the Precision Finding range of recent iPhone models.
The extended range marks a substantial improvement over the first-generation AirTag, which operates within 10-30 meters. This upgrade will make it notably easier for users to locate misplaced items when they're within the detection zone.
Beyond the improved range, Apple plans to implement additional safety features. The new model will include a more secure built-in speaker design that resists tampering, addressing concerns about potential misuse for stalking.
Despite these internal improvements, the overall design of the AirTag 2 is expected to remain largely unchanged from its predecessor, which was first introduced in April 2021.
The launch of AirTag 2 will mark roughly four years since the original device's debut, representing Apple's commitment to enhancing its item-tracking technology while addressing security concerns.
For those considering an immediate purchase, the current AirTag remains available as a single unit or in a cost-effective four-pack bundle, though the upcoming model's enhanced capabilities may warrant waiting for some users.
