Apple plans to release updated MacBook Air models featuring the new M4 chip ahead of other anticipated products in early 2025, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

The refreshed 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air laptops are expected to debut before Apple's traditional spring event, likely through a press release announcement between January and March 2025. This timeline puts their launch ahead of other upcoming devices like the iPhone SE 4, and updated iPad Air models scheduled for spring release.

While no major design changes are anticipated for the new MacBook Air lineup, the upgrade to the M4 processor promises improved performance. Early benchmarks of the M4 chip in other Mac models have shown up to 25% faster multi-core CPU performance compared to its M3 predecessor.

Additional expected features may include an ultra-wide webcam supporting Center Stage functionality and an upgrade to Thunderbolt 4 ports from the current Thunderbolt 3 standard.

This release schedule suggests Apple aims to introduce the MacBook Air updates separately from its larger spring product launches. The company has already integrated the M4 chip into its MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini lineups in recent months.

The timing represents a relatively quick update cycle for the 15-inch MacBook Air, which launched in June 2023, while offering a more substantial upgrade for the 13-inch model that hasn't seen changes since June 2022.

Apple's planned spring 2025 product lineup is shaping up to be extensive, with new iPads, the iPhone SE 4, and other devices expected to follow the MacBook Air release.
