Asus is pushing the boundaries of external graphics processing with its latest ROG XG Mobile, featuring cutting-edge Thunderbolt 5 connectivity and Nvidia's new GeForce RTX 5090 mobile GPU.
The 2025 edition of the ROG XG Mobile marks a major leap in eGPU technology, offering unprecedented bandwidth of up to 80 gigabits per second through Thunderbolt 5 - a substantial improvement over its predecessor's 63 Gbps capability. While the device maintains backwards compatibility with Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 connections, optimal performance requires the latest Thunderbolt 5 port.
Beyond raw graphics power, the new XG Mobile serves as a comprehensive I/O expansion hub, featuring HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, 5G Ethernet, and multiple USB ports. This makes it an ideal companion for laptops and portable systems like the ROG Ally X.
The device showcases impressive engineering achievements, with Asus redesigning the mainboard to use active bridge rectifier MOSFETs instead of traditional diodes. This innovation maintains the powerful 330W performance profile while reducing weight and keeping the same form factor.
Aesthetically, the 2025 XG Mobile features a transparent case design that displays its internal components, complemented by an RGB-illuminated Asus logo compatible with Aura Sync for customizable lighting effects.
The flagship model with the RTX 5090 laptop GPU will retail for $2,200 when it launches in Q1 2025. A more affordable variant featuring the RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU is planned for later release at $1,200.
This new eGPU targets both hardcore gamers seeking maximum performance and content creators requiring powerful graphics capabilities for AI workloads and demanding applications. The device supports Nvidia's latest AI technologies, including DLSS and frame generation, making it capable of handling complex, GPU-intensive tasks and running demanding AAA games at maximum visual quality.
