OpenAI's popular AI services ChatGPT and Sora are currently experiencing widespread outages, leaving thousands of users unable to access the platforms.
The issues began around 1:30 PM ET when users started reporting that while ChatGPT would load, it failed to respond to queries. Many encountered "internal server error" messages or found the chatbot completely unresponsive.
By 2:00 PM ET, OpenAI officially acknowledged the problems on their status page, confirming that ChatGPT, their API services, and the Sora text-to-video generator were all facing "high error rates." The company attributed the disruption to an "upstream provider" in a subsequent update at 2:18 PM ET.
Over 5,300 users have reported service problems on Down Detector, with the majority of disruptions concentrated in the United States. The outage affects not only ChatGPT but also extends to OpenAI's recently launched Sora video generation tool.
At 3:06 PM ET, OpenAI announced they were "continuing to work on a fix," though no estimated time for service restoration has been provided.
This marks another instance in a series of recent technical difficulties for OpenAI's services. Earlier this month, both ChatGPT and Sora experienced hours-long downtime shortly after Sora's release to ChatGPT subscribers. A similar widespread outage also impacted the platforms in June.
Users across social media platforms have expressed frustration over the service interruption, particularly those who rely on these AI tools for work and study purposes. OpenAI continues to monitor the situation while users await the restoration of services.
