The Arvada Police Department in Colorado has launched an innovative program to fight vehicle theft by distributing free Apple AirTags and Tile trackers to local residents.
The initiative aims to help vehicle owners quickly locate their cars if stolen, while also deterring potential thieves. Each recipient receives not only a tracking device but also a warning sticker to display on their vehicle, indicating it can be tracked by law enforcement if taken.
While police won't have direct access to tracking information, vehicle owners can provide location details to authorities if their car is stolen. The department views this investment in trackers as more cost-effective than investigating vehicle thefts after they occur.
The program's next giveaway is scheduled for April, though the total number of devices to be distributed remains undisclosed. Individual AirTags retail for $29, while Tile trackers range from $25-35 depending on the model.
Interestingly, these same tracking devices have been used by criminals since their 2021 debut. Reports emerged of thieves secretly placing AirTags on vehicles in public areas - hidden on trailer hitches, bumpers, and gas caps - to track them to more isolated locations for theft.
This dual nature of tracking technology presents both opportunities and challenges for law enforcement. While police departments can leverage these devices to combat theft, they must also remain vigilant about their potential misuse by criminals.
The Arvada Police Department's program represents a proactive approach to vehicle theft prevention, turning consumer technology into a crime-fighting tool while empowering residents to protect their property.
