Apple's upcoming iOS 18 update brings a host of exciting new features to the Maps app, enhancing user experience and functionality. While the update doesn't include AI-powered additions, it introduces several practical improvements that users will find valuable.
Detailed Topographic Maps for Hiking Enthusiasts
One of the standout features in iOS 18 is the introduction of detailed topographic maps for iPhone users. This addition complements the topographic maps that were made available on Apple Watch last year. The new Maps app now includes comprehensive trail networks and hiking routes for all 63 U.S. national parks.
Users can easily search for "hikes" or "hiking routes" to discover nearby options. The app provides essential information such as hike length, elevation, and ratings. Hikers can filter trails based on length, route type (loop, point-to-point, or out-and-back), and elevation. For convenience, these routes can be saved for offline access.
When zooming into hiking areas, users can view specific trails and access detailed information, including the highest and lowest points, distance, and section lengths. It's worth noting that trails and hikes are treated as separate entities within the app, allowing for more precise navigation.
Custom Route Creation
iOS 18 introduces a new custom route feature, enabling users to plan their own hiking paths. At a trailhead, users can tap "Create a Custom Route" and set points on the map. The app then provides length and elevation details for the custom route. For added convenience, users can utilize options like Reverse, Out and Back, or Close Loop to automatically complete their routes.
Safety is a priority, as the app prevents the creation of unsafe routes that deviate from existing trails. This feature isn't limited to hiking – users can create custom routes for any location by adding a pinned spot and selecting "Create Custom Route" from the "More" menu.
Enhanced Search Functionality
The new "Search here" button makes it easier to explore potential destinations. When users look up a place and tap search, the app now focuses on the area displayed on the screen rather than the user's physical location. This feature updates dynamically as users pan around the map, offering more control over the search area.
Improved Organization with Library and Favorites
iOS 18 introduces a centralized Library section in the Maps app, replacing the separate sections found in iOS 17. This new Library houses all saved content, including locations, routes, guides, and pins. Users can easily save favorite hikes, trails, or custom routes to the Library for quick access later.
To save a location, users can tap the "Add to Library" button or use the "+" button when viewing any map location. Saved items can be renamed, and additional information can be added for future reference. Offline access is also available for downloaded routes.
Personal Notes Feature
A new notes feature allows users to add private, on-device notes to any location in the Maps app. This function helps users remember specific details about places they've visited or plan to visit.
With these updates, Apple continues to refine and improve the Maps app, making it an even more valuable tool for navigation, exploration, and outdoor activities.
