DJI has officially launched its innovative Flip drone, featuring a distinctive design with carbon fiber spokes reminiscent of a penny-farthing bicycle. The new entry-level drone combines user-friendly operation with advanced camera capabilities at a competitive price point of $439.

The Flip introduces several groundbreaking features, including automatic power-on when unfolded and full-coverage propeller guards with a unique spoke design. A forward-facing 3D infrared sensor provides additional protection against front impacts.

Despite its entry-level positioning, the Flip boasts impressive camera specifications. The drone carries a 1/1.3-inch sensor capable of capturing 4K video at 60fps and 48-megapixel still photos through an f/1.7 aperture lens. A three-axis gimbal helps maintain smooth footage even in breezy conditions.

The drone offers simplified operation with single-button hand launch and landing capabilities, while still providing traditional joystick controls. Flight time extends to 31 minutes per battery charge, surpassing many competitors in its class.

Two package options are available:

  • Standard package ($439): Includes basic RC-N3 controller with phone screen compatibility
  • Premium kit ($779): Features three batteries, carrying case, and DJI RC 2 controller with built-in 700-nit screen

While the Flip maintains a sub-249-gram weight to avoid strict regulatory requirements, its size remains comparable to other DJI models when folded. The drone produces notable noise levels despite its ducted propellers.

DJI positions the Flip as a complementary offering alongside their existing Neo and Mini series, rather than a replacement. The company confirms it will continue supporting multiple drone lines to serve different types of beginners.

The DJI Flip is available for immediate purchase and shipping through DJI's official website.
