Apple's base model iPhone 17, expected to launch in September 2025, may finally receive a major display upgrade that has so far been reserved for Pro models only.

According to recent supply chain reports shared by Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, the standard iPhone 17 will feature a higher refresh rate display, potentially bringing ProMotion technology to Apple's entry-level flagship iPhone for the first time.

The upgrade would involve switching from the current low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels to more advanced low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) displays. This change enables refresh rates ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, compared to the 60Hz limit on current standard models.

This enhancement would allow the base iPhone 17 to support always-on display functionality, showing persistent time, widgets, and notifications on the Lock Screen. Users would also experience noticeably smoother scrolling and improved video playback quality.

Industry analyst Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants supports these claims, suggesting both the standard iPhone 17 and a rumored slimmer "iPhone 17 Air" model will incorporate ProMotion technology.

If these reports prove accurate, 2025 would mark the first time Apple's entire iPhone lineup features high refresh rate displays, eliminating one of the key differentiating factors between standard and Pro models. This move would also bring Apple's base models in line with competitors who have long offered higher refresh rates across their premium smartphone ranges.
