Linux kernel 6.14 is bringing native support for the dedicated Microsoft Copilot key, a new addition to modern Windows laptops designed to launch AI assistant services.
The update includes a patch to the atkbd keyboard driver that correctly maps the F23 key to handle the Copilot shortcut functionality. This development comes as multiple laptop manufacturers have started incorporating the dedicated Copilot button into their keyboards.
According to Lenovo engineer Mark Pearson, who authored the patch, Microsoft implemented the Copilot shortcut using a Meta+Shift+F23 key combination. However, the Linux kernel previously lacked proper mapping for the F23 scancode (0x6e), preventing the key sequence from working properly.
With this update, the key will now be properly recognized by Linux systems, though the specific actions triggered by pressing the Copilot key will be determined by individual Linux desktop environments.
The keyboard driver update is part of a broader input-related enhancement package for Linux 6.14. The update also expands game controller support through the XPad driver, adding compatibility for several new devices including:
- QH Electronics controller
- Wooting Two He
- Nacon Evol-X Xbox One Controller
- Nacon Pro Compact
- Unofficial Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver
This kernel update represents Linux's quick adaptation to evolving hardware standards, maintaining compatibility with the latest laptop innovations while expanding support for gaming peripherals.
