The FBI revealed that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the perpetrator of the deadly New Year's Day attack in New Orleans, conducted surveillance of his target location using Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses during two visits prior to the incident.

According to FBI Special Agent Lyonel Myrthil, Jabbar made reconnaissance trips to New Orleans in October and November, during which he cycled through the French Quarter wearing the smart glasses. The internet-connected eyewear, which can record video and links to Facebook accounts, was used to capture footage of areas he later targeted.

The revelation came during a Sunday press conference where investigators shared new details about the attack that claimed 14 lives and left approximately 30 people injured. The FBI disclosed that Jabbar, a former U.S. Army soldier allegedly inspired by ISIS, also traveled to Egypt in 2023 and Canada in 2024, though connections between these trips and the attack remain unclear.

On New Year's Day, Jabbar drove a truck into crowds celebrating on Bourbon Street. Before the vehicular attack, he attempted to plant improvised explosive devices in coolers, though these failed to detonate. The incident ended when police fatally shot Jabbar after he wounded two officers.

The FBI maintains that Jabbar acted alone in executing the attack, though investigations continue into potential associates both domestically and internationally. Law enforcement is still working to determine the motive behind targeting New Orleans.

As the city prepares for upcoming major events including Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl, officials have implemented enhanced security measures. President Biden is scheduled to visit New Orleans to meet with victims' families as the community continues to mourn the tragic loss of life.
