Microsoft has revealed plans to discontinue OneNote for Windows 10, with support ending on October 14, 2025. The move comes as Windows 10 approaches its end of mainstream support, marking the conclusion of its 10-year run.
The company is pushing users to transition to the desktop version of OneNote, which is included in Microsoft 365. This newer version promises enhanced features, including Microsoft Information Protection sensitivity labeling and Copilot AI integration.
To encourage migration, Microsoft will implement a phased approach starting in mid-2025. Users will experience deliberately reduced sync performance in June 2025, particularly affecting those who use OneNote across multiple devices or for collaborative work.
By July 2025, warning banners will appear within the Windows 10 app to alert users about the impending end of support. After October 14, 2025, the app will no longer receive security updates or new features.
The announcement aligns with Microsoft's broader strategy to modernize its software ecosystem. The company has published detailed migration guidelines to help users and IT administrators transition smoothly to the newer OneNote platform.
Users are advised to begin the migration process well before the cutoff date to maintain uninterrupted access to their notes and avoid potential security risks associated with using unsupported software.
