Sony has released a nostalgic update for PlayStation 5 owners, bringing back the iconic PS1 boot up screen as part of PlayStation's 30th anniversary celebrations.
The update, which requires a console restart, displays the classic PlayStation 1 startup sequence followed by a special 30th anniversary logo. Upon reaching the home screen, players can now customize their background with designs and sound effects inspired by previous PlayStation generations.
The commemorative update arrives ahead of PlayStation's 30th anniversary on December 3, 2024, marking three decades since the original console's launch in 1994. Sony has added these retro touches as a limited-time feature, allowing fans to revisit memorable moments from the brand's history.
Players can choose from five distinct designs: 30th Anniversary, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Those preferring the current interface can easily switch back to the standard PS5 design.
Alongside the software update, Sony has unveiled limited edition PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles featuring design elements from the original 1994 PlayStation. The PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection, released on November 21, 2024, includes specially numbered PS5 Pro bundles, with only 12,300 units available worldwide.
The hardware collection pays tribute to the original PlayStation's iconic gray color scheme, incorporating classic design elements into modern PS5 systems. This combination of software and hardware releases demonstrates Sony's commitment to honoring PlayStation's gaming legacy while moving forward with current technology.
