Spotify announced on Thursday that it has submitted a new iOS app update to Apple, following a landmark court ruling that loosens Apple's App Store restrictions. The update aims to provide U.S. consumers with more payment flexibility and direct access to subscription information.
The streaming giant's move comes in response to Wednesday's court decision in the Epic Games vs. Apple case, which mandates Apple to allow developers to communicate with customers about alternative payment methods outside their apps.
The proposed update will enable several new features for U.S. users, including:
- Viewing subscription pricing details directly in the app
- Accessing promotional information
- Using payment methods beyond Apple's system
- Clicking links to purchase or modify subscriptions
"These are the kinds of improvements that any app should offer its users," Spotify stated in their release, expressing frustration over previous limitations.
The court ruling specifically targets Apple's practice of restricting developers from offering alternative payment options. While Apple has expressed disagreement with the decision and plans to appeal, they must comply with the order immediately.
Other major platforms are following suit. Patreon announced plans to update its iOS app to enable creator payments outside Apple's system, potentially saving creators the 30% fee previously charged through Apple's payment system.
The development marks a notable shift in the App Store ecosystem, with multiple companies now moving to implement changes that could reduce costs for users and increase revenue for content creators.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced plans to return Fortnite to the iOS App Store next week, suggesting a possible resolution to the long-standing dispute if Apple extends the new framework globally.
Apple has not yet responded to the submitted app updates, but the court order requires immediate implementation of these changes.
