The Tesla Cybertruck has earned the highest possible safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), putting to rest earlier concerns about its unconventional design.
The 5-star Overall Safety Rating applies to both 2024 and 2025 Cybertruck models, marking another achievement in Tesla's track record of producing exceptionally safe vehicles.
When the Cybertruck was first unveiled, its angular design and stainless steel exoskeleton sparked debates about safety, particularly regarding pedestrian impacts and crash performance. However, NHTSA's rigorous testing has demonstrated that these concerns were unfounded.
In the detailed assessment, the Cybertruck showed impressive results across all testing categories:
- Frontal Crash Tests: The vehicle achieved a 5-star rating for the driver and a 4-star rating for the front passenger in 35 mph head-on collision simulations
- Side Crash Tests: A perfect 5-star rating was awarded for occupant protection during side impacts
- Rollover Resistance: The Cybertruck earned 5 stars with a remarkably low rollover risk of just 12.40%
The electric pickup truck has set new standards in its category, showing the lowest overall probability of injury and rollover risk among all pickup trucks tested by the NHTSA.
This achievement adds to Tesla's impressive safety record, following the top safety ratings previously earned by the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y from various regulatory bodies. Tesla's Cybertruck has racked up six recalls since its December 2023 launch, placing it in the bottom 9% of 2024 vehicles for reliability, according to recent analysis.
