TSMC's Arizona Plant Expands Production with AMD and Apple Chips

TSMC's Arizona-based Fab 21 has expanded its production lineup to include AMD's Ryzen 9000-series processors alongside Apple's chips, according to industry journalist Tim Culpan's sources.

The facility is currently manufacturing three key processors using TSMC's advanced 4nm-class technologies:

  • Apple A16 Bionic for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
  • Components of Apple's S9 system-in-package for smartwatches
  • AMD Ryzen 9000-series CPU (reportedly codenamed "Grand Rapids")

While Phase 1A of the facility is operational with installed tools and a production capacity of 10,000 wafer starts per month, Phase 1B faces some tooling bottlenecks. The second phase is expected to add 14,000 wafer starts per month once fully equipped.

The fab continues to address staffing challenges. This week, TSMC opened several hundred positions to Taiwan-based employees for roles in operations and equipment installation. Though the company prioritizes local hiring and American staff now outnumber Taiwanese workers, the recruitment drive from headquarters indicates ongoing workforce needs.

The facility is scheduled to begin official operations in the first half of 2025. This development marks a notable step in TSMC's U.S. manufacturing presence and its ability to serve major tech clients locally.

Regarding AMD's production, sources mention a "Grand Rapids" CPU, though this could potentially be a misinterpretation of "Granite Ridge," a known AMD silicon designation. The exact specifications remain unclear, but the chip is being manufactured using TSMC's N4/N4P process technology.
