United Airlines is moving faster than initially planned to bring Starlink satellite internet to its passengers, with the first commercial flight offering the service scheduled for spring 2024.

The airline will begin testing Starlink's high-speed internet service next month on an Embraer E-175 regional jet. Following successful testing, United aims to outfit its entire regional fleet with Starlink terminals by the end of the year, with the first mainline aircraft receiving the technology before 2024 concludes.

The installation process for each aircraft is expected to take approximately two days, with the option to split the work across two nights during regular maintenance periods.

Once operational, the Starlink service will be available free of charge to all United MileagePlus members. Passengers will be able to connect multiple devices under a single account and enjoy gate-to-gate internet access comparable to ground-based connections. The service will support streaming, gaming, and various productivity applications.

"Adding Starlink service on as many planes as we can – as quickly as we can – is at the center of it all," said Richard Nunn, CEO of United's MileagePlus program. The enhanced connectivity is expected to enable new partnerships and benefits for program members.

The accelerated rollout follows United's agreement with SpaceX in September 2023 to bring Starlink to its entire fleet. United joins other carriers like Hawaiian Airlines and JSX in partnering with SpaceX's satellite internet service.

The implementation represents a major upgrade to United's in-flight connectivity offerings, promising passengers a seamless internet experience whether accessing content through personal devices or seatback screens.
