Apple's latest iOS 18.1 beta 2 release has brought an exciting development for tech enthusiasts in the European Union. For the first time, English-speaking users in the EU can now access Apple Intelligence, a feature previously unavailable in the region.

Expanded Accessibility

The new beta version has expanded language support beyond US English. Apple Intelligence now offers localization options for several English-speaking countries, including Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Singapore, the UK, and Australia.

Previously, Apple had restricted access to Apple Intelligence within the EU, likely due to regulatory concerns related to the Digital Markets Act. While these issues may not be fully resolved, EU users can now test the feature in the beta version.

Device Compatibility

Apple Intelligence offers a range of advanced capabilities, such as text composition, email drafting, app automation, image generation, and document summarization. However, these features require substantial computing power.

For iPhone users, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are compatible. iPad users need devices powered by M1 or later Apple silicon processors.

Accessing Apple Intelligence in the EU

To use Apple Intelligence in the EU, follow these steps:

  1. Install the iOS 18.1 developer beta on your compatible device.
  2. Navigate to Settings > General > Language & Region.
  3. Add "English (US)" as a language.
  4. Set your region to "United States" (this won't affect App Store regions or purchases).
  5. In Settings, tap "Apple Intelligence & Siri" and set the language to "English (United States)".
  6. Join the Apple Intelligence waitlist.
  7. Once approved, turn on Apple Intelligence.

While some features may not be available until later next year, this update marks a significant step towards bringing Apple's AI capabilities to users in the European Union.

As the official release of iOS 18.1 approaches in October, it remains to be seen how Apple will navigate the regulatory landscape in the EU. For now, users can explore these cutting-edge features through the beta program.
