X, formerly known as Twitter, announced a substantial price increase for its Premium Plus subscription tier, with monthly rates jumping nearly 40 percent effective December 21, 2024.

In the United States, the Premium Plus monthly subscription cost has increased from $16 to $22, while the annual subscription rose from $168 to $229. Similar price hikes were implemented across European markets, with countries like France, Germany, and Spain seeing increases from €16 to €21.

The company attributes this price adjustment to several factors, including the transformation of Premium Plus into a completely ad-free experience. The higher subscription fees will also support X's creator revenue sharing program, which rewards content creators based on engagement rather than ad views.

Premium Plus subscribers receive additional benefits including:

  • Ad-free browsing
  • Priority support access
  • Trend monitoring tools
  • Higher usage limits for Grok AI models
  • Extended video publishing capabilities
  • Article writing privileges
  • Enhanced reply visibility

Current subscribers will maintain their existing rates until January 20, 2025, after which the new pricing structure will take effect on their next billing cycle. The Basic and Premium subscription tiers remain unchanged by this price adjustment.

This marks the largest price increase since Elon Musk acquired the platform in 2022. The move comes as X faces ongoing challenges, including a $250 million copyright infringement lawsuit filed by music publishers in 2023.
