As Apple celebrates the 10th anniversary of its smartwatch line, exciting developments are on the horizon for both the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch SE 3, expected to launch in September 2025.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: Enhanced Connectivity and Features
The upcoming Ultra 3 is poised to receive major upgrades after skipping a 2024 update. One of the most notable additions will be 5G connectivity through a new MediaTek modem. The Ultra 3 is also expected to introduce satellite connectivity - a first for Apple's smartwatch lineup. This feature will enable users to send texts and location data via Globalstar satellites when cellular networks are unavailable, making it particularly valuable for outdoor enthusiasts.
Display improvements are also anticipated, including an LTPO3 OLED screen offering up to 40% better brightness at certain angles. The watch may feature a redesigned metal back with an enlarged charging coil and integrated antenna.
Health monitoring capabilities could expand to include blood pressure tracking, though this feature's inclusion isn't guaranteed due to development challenges. If implemented, it would focus on detecting hypertension patterns rather than providing exact measurements.
Apple Watch SE 3: Long-Awaited Update
The budget-friendly SE line is due for a refresh after three years. The third-generation SE is expected to receive substantial upgrades while maintaining its position as an entry-level option.
The new SE may feature expanded display sizes with slimmer bezels, potentially adopting the 41mm and 45mm dimensions introduced with the Series 7. Always-on display technology, previously reserved for higher-end models, might finally reach the SE line.
Performance improvements will likely come via a newer processor, possibly the S10 chip, enabling faster app performance and improved on-device Siri processing. The addition of an Ultra Wideband chip could bring Precision Finding and HomePod integration capabilities.
While the SE has traditionally excluded advanced health features, the third generation might incorporate sleep apnea detection, as this feature doesn't require additional hardware.
Both new models will launch alongside watchOS 12, which is expected to introduce design elements inspired by visionOS, including translucent interfaces and subtle lighting effects. The software update will also bring new Apple Intelligence features, though these will require iPhone connectivity for processing power.
