Google has begun distributing the September 2024 Android security update to a wide range of Pixel devices. This monthly update focuses on addressing security vulnerabilities and improving system stability, without introducing new features.

Devices Receiving the Update

The update is rolling out to 15 Pixel devices, including:

  • Pixel 9 series (Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold)
  • Pixel 8 series (Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 8a)
  • Pixel Fold
  • Pixel 7 series (Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a)
  • Pixel 6 series (Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a)
  • Google Pixel Tablet

Key Fixes and Improvements

The update brings two main improvements:

  1. Removal of a third-party APK to address a security vulnerability (applicable to all supported devices except the Pixel 9 series)
  2. Enhanced wireless (Wi-Fi) stability and performance under specific conditions (exclusive to the Pixel 9 series)

Security Enhancements

This patch addresses multiple security vulnerabilities, with severity levels ranging from high to critical. In total, 36 security issues have been resolved, including 11 fixed in the September 1 patch and an additional 25 in the September 5 patch.

One vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-32896, was noted to be "under limited, targeted exploitation," highlighting the importance of this update.

Android Version and Future Updates

The September security patch is still based on Android 14, not the upcoming Android 15. Google is expected to release Android 15 for Pixel devices in mid-October, starting with the Pixel 9 series.

Update Availability

The update is being rolled out in stages, so users may not receive it immediately. It will be available as an over-the-air (OTA) update that can be downloaded and installed from the System Update settings on eligible devices.

Users can also manually download the factory and OTA images from Google's official website if they prefer not to wait for the automatic update.

It's worth noting that the Pixel 5a has reached the end of its support lifecycle and will not receive this or any future updates.

As always, it's recommended that users install this security update promptly to protect their devices from potential security risks and benefit from the latest improvements.
