Chinese technology leader Huawei has announced an ambitious plan to expand its Harmony operating system, targeting 100,000 applications within the next 6-12 months. The announcement came from company chairman Xu Zhijun during a recent conference.
The Harmony OS, launched five years ago as Huawei's alternative to Android following US sanctions, currently hosts over 15,000 apps. This new target represents a major scaling up of the platform's ecosystem.
"We need more personalized and boutique applications to meet consumer demands," stated Xu during his address. He called on developers, government agencies, state enterprises, and social organizations to embrace and contribute to the Harmony OS platform.
The chairman acknowledged that the system remains in its early stages and asked users for patience as it develops. "The more people use Harmony OS, the faster it will mature and improve," Xu explained.
This push for rapid expansion comes as Huawei continues to adapt to restricted access to US technology. The company views building a robust, independent operating system as key to its future growth and technological self-reliance.
