Atari is set to release a modernized version of its classic 7800 console, bringing retro gaming into the 21st century. The Atari 7800 Plus, slated for a winter 2024 launch, promises to blend nostalgia with contemporary technology.

A Compact Powerhouse

The new console, priced at $129.99, is a miniaturized replica of the original 1986 model. Despite its smaller size, it packs a punch with an HDMI port for connection to modern TVs. The standout feature is its compatibility with both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges, allowing gamers to dust off their old collections.

Enhanced Gaming Experience

Players can choose between widescreen and 4:3 aspect ratios, catering to both modern preferences and those seeking an authentic retro feel. Atari claims "near-perfect compatibility" with original and third-party games, expanding the potential library for users.

New Wireless Controllers

Two new wireless controllers are launching alongside the console:

  1. The CX78 Plus Wireless Gamepad: Included with the console, this two-button controller recreates the original design. It's also available separately for $34.99.

  2. The CX40 Plus Wireless Joystick: Sold separately for $34.99, this controller offers an alternative control scheme.

Both controllers are compatible with the Atari 2600 Plus and can connect to PCs via a USB-C adapter.

Game Offerings

While the console comes with only one game - a new Crystal Castles sequel called Bentley Bear's Crystal Quest - Atari plans to release 10 additional titles separately for $29.99 each.

The Atari 7800 Plus is now available for preorder, with Atari partnering with Plaion for its global release. This launch marks another step in Atari's recent strategy of reviving its classic consoles for a new generation of gamers while satisfying long-time fans.
