In the latest move to distance itself from its Twitter origins, X is preparing to rebrand its Direct Messages (DM) feature as "XChat," a name that has sparked discussions due to its similarity to adult-oriented messaging services.
According to X software engineer Zach Warunek, the platform plans to completely remove the existing DM tab, replacing it with the new XChat system. App researcher Nima Owji confirmed that X employees are already using XChat internally.
The rebranding appears to be more than just a name change. Leaked screenshots suggest XChat will compete directly with WhatsApp by offering enhanced features including:
- End-to-end encrypted messaging
- File sharing capabilities
- Disappearing messages
- Unread status controls
- Universal message deletion
- Voice messaging (planned for post-launch)
A notable addition appears to be PIN verification functionality, though the authenticity of leaked screenshots remains unconfirmed.
This update aligns with Elon Musk's ambitious vision to transform X into an all-encompassing communication platform. Earlier this year, Musk expressed plans to eventually conduct all his calls and texts exclusively through X, eliminating the need for traditional phone numbers.
While no official launch date has been announced, the open discussion of XChat by multiple X employees suggests the feature may debut soon. The choice of name, however, has raised eyebrows among users who note its unfortunate similarity to adult-oriented chat services of the early internet era.
This rebranding represents another step in X's systematic removal of Twitter's legacy features and branding under Musk's leadership.
